Very shortly, we will publish the work done so far on Mission (CEA Accreditation Standard 1); In advance of this, we would like to provide some explanation and context that will help you understand the thinking behind the document a little more clearly.
1) We would refer you to the full CEA description of Mission to get an overview.
2) We decided to draft a complete package for use on the web, student handbooks, and in promotional material of: a) Introduction to School, b) Vision, c) Mission, d) Values e) What you can expect from SFL, f) What SFL expects from you.
3) In all these items, we took our students to be the audience, and therefore tried to keep the language relatively simple, as well as personalised.
4) Whilst drafting the document, we overviewed all CEA and EAQUALS standards, and tried to incorporate as many items as possible into the commitments we make.
5) We inserted a few proposals into the document, i.e. things SFL might do that would improve the student experience as well as take us further down the road to accreditation. We will look in more detail at some of these issues later.
6) Section e) - 'What you can expect from SFL' is basically a policy proposal, but one that is addressed to, and relevant to students. Its purpose is to provide specific, concrete commitments arising from the mission statement.
7) Section f) - 'What SFL expects from you' takes us into the area of student contracts; it seemed like a very logical follow-up - it has little to do with 'Mission' as such, but we were thinking ahead to how complete documents and handbooks might be compiled.
The Mission is an important document, since it provides the broad policy guidelines from which decisions should be made and measured. We wanted it to be short, simple, clear, and above all to reflect a student-centred orientation and commitment.
You are welcome to post suggestions for improving the document as it stands, or to contact any of us individually, once we have published the draft.
